Muay Thai is known as the ancient art of 8 limbs - legs, knees, elbow and hands. As a combat sport of Thailand, it uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques.
Coach Sonny has a background in wrestling and has been in martial arts for over 20 years. He started with Filipino martial arts where he studied Serrada Eskrima (Filipino Stick Fighting). Coach Sonny trained under the guidance of the Rosales brothers. He also trained with Grandmaster Jimmy Tacosa to further his knowledge and techniques.
From there he studied Muay Thai (Thai Kickboxing) again under the guidance of Kru Vut Kamnark from United World Muay Thai Association. Coach Sonny has been focusing on teaching and promoting the art of Muay Thai the past 15 years. His goal is to provide the highest quality of instruction and training to his students.
Coach Sonny has full instructorship certifications in Serrada Eskrima under Mandirigma and Muay Thai under United World Muay Thai Association. He is dedicated to the teaching of martial arts in its true form thru history, tradition, knowledge and techniques.
BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent.
Judo, meaning "gentle way" is a modern martial art, combat and Olympic sport created in Japan in 1882 by Jigoro Kano. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the objective is to either throw or takedown an opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue an opponent with a pin, or force an opponent to submit with a joint lock or a choke.
Sensei Mark originally started studying Judo at Western Illinois University where he attended college and was involved with their Judo Club. Sensei Mark is a 5th degree black belt in Judo. He is currently the head instructor for Judo and self-defense at Harper College. Sensei Mark has been dedicated to teaching students for over 20 years. He is also a life member of United Martial Arts.
Wrestling is a combat sport involving grappling type techniques such as clinch fighting, throws and takedowns, joint locks, pins and other grappling holds.
Coach Vannak is currently coaching wrestling at Glenbard North High School.
SpitFire Krav Maga classes at Prime Muay Thai MMA are all about promoting awareness, strength, and self-defense skills for the people in our community. For women, these classes focus on rape prevention techniques and tactics, to build both inner and outer strength. Not only would you learn to spot danger signs, you will learn how to defend yourself when no danger signs are given. What do you have to lose?... Some inches while gaining confidence and skills!!!
Ria is passionate about self protection and empowering those who need it the most through positive and realistic training. She is a black belt krav maga practitioner since 2011 and likes to spend her spare time practicing muay thai, boxing, jiu jitsu, and judo. She is active and likes attending different self-defense and martial arts seminars such as: FMA, STX, CSW, combatives, first responder, and tactical shooting, to name a few.
Ria believes that cross training gives her first hand experience with the different styles of training, teaching, and self defense techniques - what really works and why.
Ria is also an active volunteer / civil first responder for organizations such as Operation Underground Railroad, Mutual Ground, Women's At Risk, Samaritan's Purse and others.
She is currently the Education Director for American Women's Self Defense Association, responsible for their self defense instructors' curriculum.
